Q. - My young child wants a pet. What is the best to start with?
A. – When choosing a child’s first pet we often think of small animals such as hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits or even small budgie birds. Although small animals can indeed make great pets for responsible, gentle children, they’re not the perfect pet for very young children.
Children younger than 7 may not be able to physically handle a small animal properly and they can easily be injured unintentionally by being squeezed or dropped, and many children have been bitten or scratched by animals trying to defend themselves. However, with parental guidance they can learn to look but not touch, unless you are holding the animal and allowing the child to pet it while you maintain control.
Children can learn plenty about responsibility by taking care of a small animal or bird, and children who are old enough to handle these animals can develop life skills feeding, cleaning and caring for their new pet.
As parents, we are the ultimate caretaker of the pet, and we must make sure the animal is being properly cared for on a daily basis. With all these factors in mind, a new pet can be a happy and fulfilling addition to your home!
